Empowering Families in Meetings: Your Voice Matters
Walking into a meeting about your child can feel overwhelming. Emotions are high, there is often a lot of information to process, and it can be difficult to know how to get your point across effectively.
One of the most powerful tools you can use is not arguing, correcting, or challenging. It is asking questions.
Questions help you gather information, understand decision-making, and encourage professionals to explain their reasoning. They can open up conversations rather than create conflict.
ā "Can you help me understand how that decision was reached?" ā "What evidence supports that view?" ā "How will this meet my child's needs?" ā "What would need to change for a different approach to be considered?"
Remember:
š¹ Prepare beforehand and take notes. š¹ Let others speak fully before responding. š¹ Stay as calm as possible, even when discussions feel difficult. š¹ Focus on understanding as well as being understood. š¹ Never feel you have to attend alone. Take someone with you for support whenever possible.
Advocacy is not about winning an argument. It is about working towards the best outcomes for your child while making sure your voice is heard.
Our Empowering Families in Meetings course helps parents develop practical strategies to navigate meetings with confidence, ask effective questions, communicate clearly, and advocate successfully for their children.
š Because informed, confident families make a difference.
